v0.9 New Shelves Mode

New Shelves Mode

The old mode where you match items into boxes that hold 3 items is now called “cubbies” and the new mode is called shelves. On a shelf, three items can match anywhere, but you only get one free space on each shelf to help organize things so you’ll have to plan ahead.

This mode was difficult to balance, and is ultimately much easier than the cubbies mode. I have a choice of releasing it as it is and moving on to other things, or spending more time getting the balance right. But since it’s been almost 2 months since the last update releasing it as it is is the better idea. And iterating where needed.

New designs

The menu needed a new design to accommodate the new shelves mode. Also I added a new rendered background to the cubbies. I really like the new cubbies background, and really dislike the shelves background. So I’ll probably come back to it and fix up the shelves background later. It’s meant to look like a modular shelf in a grocery store.

The art is all in 3D actually, but I render it out to 2D sprites before it goes in the game. So there’s still the possibility of switching to fully rendered in 3D in game too. But the main thing holding me back is that the drag-and-drop code took a while to get working right in 2D. And making it work in 3D will be just that much more difficult.
